Travel Apps

There are far too many travel apps out there and it can be overwhelming, especially when you are first starting out or when you are just researching your trip. Below are some of our favorite apps that we have actually used on our year-long trip.

  • WhatsApp – stay connected with everyone using only data so you don’t need a phone plan
  • Sygic – helps you stay organized and plan your trip. Sometimes I also use it to remember where we have gone in a day so that I can go back and write about impromptu trips to places.
  • AirBnb – We are traveling as a couple so a shared room in an AirBnb is often cheaper than two beds in a hostel.
  • Hostelworld – We have had a few great experiences with Hostels. I also use Hostelworld to judge how expensive AirBnbs should be. So for example if a bed in hostel costs $14. Then two beds would cost us $28. So I put my AirBnb search filter at $28 and if I can’t find a nice AirBnb for under that price we go with the hostel.
  • Skyscanner – This app will let you search flights to “everywhere” if you want to do fun last-minute trips.
  • Hopper – I like the feature this app has to “watch” flights and then it will notify you when the price decreases.
  • TripAdvisor – We enjoy reading TripAdvisor’s one star reviews for places that have high ratings in general. Peoples drama is so extra sometimes!
  • Rome2Rio – This app will tell you all the possible ways to get from point A to point B. Especially in areas where public transportation isn’t big it was a life saver. It helped us with the countryside bus in England and with the Night bus in Cambodia.

What other apps do you use to get around the world?
