Week 24

Day 162

We started our week with a pretty sunset from the AirBnb. The balcony gives a great view over part of Pattaya.

We’ve decided the beach in Pattaya is a bit of a bust. People tried to warn us, and we should have listened. But you live, you learn! Terminal 21 is a huge airport themed shopping mall. People had said it was an experience and we definitely agree.

Each floor is split up in to different cities or countries. We joked that we didn’t need to be traveling for a year, we could have just come to this mall!

We had dinner at a restaurant at the mall. It was good but a little expensive. We did enjoy the ambiance though. Check out the window with a mannequin coming out of it below.

Walking home we passed an outdoor lady boy concert/festival. You could hear the music almost the whole walk. It was interesting even though we couldn’t understand a word of it.

We also enjoyed passing the OK Massage parlor. Check out the pic below. When Katie first read it she thought it said COK Therapy. #notsubtle

We were playing cards at home when BOOM! Power went out. The crash that we heard was so loud that Katie actually jumped up in fear. We went out on the balcony and saw that it was the whole complex. Cam wanted to go investigate after he got back we watched Netflix on the balcony because it was HOT in the room with no fan. The power finally came back around 6AM.

Day 163

There is a Big C (Thai grocery store) right down the street. Always budget traveling (and always enjoying different grocery stores around the world) so we headed there today. There was lots of normal stuff and then some interesting things. Including durian and shot sized peanut butter.

The grocery store is located in a shopping mall that has Dairy Queen, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and a lot of American fast food. Katie couldn’t resist the chili dog (as a reminder of home) but then she wished that she had. It looked similar but it didn’t taste like Dairy Queen from home.

Little store in the condo on the bottom floor was helpful so that we didn’t need to lug the water jug all the way from the big grocery store. Cam has also talked to the daughter of the owner and learned a little bit more about Pattaya.

Day 164

We tried out the beach again today. There were still A LOT of boats. But we were expecting that this time so we enjoyed. We tried to see sunset but the clouds did not cooperate. We took in the beauty of the cloud cover before adventuring indoors incase all those clouds produced rain.

We went back to Terminal 21 because we missed out on the food court. On our walk back we saw “Come Wel” outside a massage shop. Not sure if it was a translation error or if they were trying to make an explicit joke.

We did more wandering around Terminal 21. There are so many funny statues and decorations that it is hard to see them all. There are a lot of American places, like Cold Stone and lots of places we had never heard of before.

Dinner at the food court was super cheap, 120 baht in all which is about $4. We tried a new Thai dessert, Khanom Krok or Coconut Rice Dumplings. They were little dumplings topped with sweet corn, green onions or an unknown purple stuff. They were delicious! We later found out (with a little googling) that the purple stuff was taro. Mmmmhhh they were good!

Day 165

Loving this balcony at the AirBnb. The rest of the room isn’t spectacular but the view of sunrise and sunset is nothing to complain about.

After sunset we set out to do more wondering. There are so many malls in this little beachside town. We went to one that is right near our place and enjoyed looking at all the activities they had to offer, including a bike course, ropes course, and small amusement park rides all inside. We also tried some new chips that came with dipping sauce. Always something interesting to find!

Walking street wasn’t too crowded. All the people watching in this area is fantastic.

Day 166

Yesterday was a late night so today we had a chill day. We lounged around the AirBnb and had coffee. Then for dinner we got takeout. The balcony is wonderful for chill days at home but still enjoying the views and fresh air. And those clouds!

Day 167

We found a nice coffee place down the street from the AirBnb. It is also a flower shop and smelled delicious. While we were drinking our coffee Cam made another feline friends.

Day 168

We wanted a beach day but we still don’t really like the beach in Pattaya. We went down to the beach but ended up staying out of the water.

We eventually got bored with just sitting on the beach and headed to Terminal 21 for cheap entertainment and cheap dinner in the food court. The mall food court is going to save our budget!

Next week we leave Pattaya and go back to Bangkok. We are trying to decide if we should brave a mini van again or go on the local train. We will let you know what happens!
